"Marine Mechanic Says Balmain Slipway Provides a First Rate Service"

“I’m a marine mechanic specialising in power boats. I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years. As you can imagine, I’ve seen plenty of boat yards and slipways in Sydney. And I’m very pleased with the team at Balmain Slipway. They do a first rate top quality job on all their boats.

They’re an organised, professional team that provides a premium service and they insist on providing high quality control. The slipway is tidy too… something I can’t say about many other slipways I’ve encountered in the past.

First rate operators. I highly recommend them to boaties who demand the best for their boats.”

New management takes over implementing strict safety and care procedures
With a rich boating history, experienced staff, and a focus on providing a premium service, Balmain slipway is the obvious choice for all your boating repairs and maintenance.

From the moment your boat leaves the water until it’s safely returned to the water looking good as new, your boat is in safe hands.

That’s because our slipway is a 'Patent Slipway'. This is a lot better than a ‘hard stand’ arrangement because we have full access to the hull. With a ‘hard stand’ there are spots on the hull that cannot be reached. This means spots are missed. Sometimes, a ‘hard stand’ leaves marks on the boat too.
At Balmain Slipway, there are no marks left. No missed spots. And we don’t take shortcuts.
We take extra care to set up the slipway to accommodate the size and shape of your boat. Your vessel rests on its keel when on the cradle, so we put blocks of timber on the cradle to match the keel to make sure no damage is done. We even wrap carpet around the upright arms that touch the boat to protect the boat from any marks when touching or rubbing the arms.

Meet The Team
Each team member is an experienced professional with a love of boats in their veins. When a new, inexperienced team member gets hired, he is trained to the highest standard by professionals who know boat maintenance like the back of their hands. Here are a few of our specialised team.
Shipwright
Our Boatbuilder who can fix minor dings and scratches through to major impact damage and custom modifications to your vessel.
WINCH MASTER
The winch master pulls the cradle up out of the water and lowers it back into the water He also controls the cradle on the tracks. Later on, once the vessel is in the correct position, the winch master will commnunicate via hand signals to either raise, lower or stop the winch.
DIVER
On some boats, one of our team members will put on diving gear and dive into the water to visually inspect the hull and guide the vessel into place. This is to ensure it is sitting in the correct position and no damage is done to the hull, propeller shafts, propeller, skegs, IPS Pods, underwater running gear, water intakes, vents, etc.
CRADLE MEN
The cradle men stand on an elevated platform while the cradle is lowered into the water. Their job is to position the vessel and tighten the arms that come out and hug the sides of the boat. This is to support the boat and stop it from falling over when balancing on the boats keel
BOAT INSPECTOR
The boat inspector watches the boat as it ascends from the water to make sure everything is looking good. It’s his job to watch the keel and the hull because the other staff cannot see under the boat from their positions.

Watch Your Boat Getting Slipped

Some boat owners want to see our slipway in action when slipping and working on their boats. Unlike other slipways that discourage owners from onsite visits, we don’t. We understand your boat is your pride and joy and that you may want to see what’s going below the water and get some out of water pics of your boat. That’s fine by us. In fact, we love to point out the extra care we take. Just let us know beforehand and you can see it all.

"I was involved in the process"

“I like that I could be around my boat while it was worked on. I was kept in the loop and involved in the process; not shut out like on other slipways.”

One thing to keep in mind. If you’re after the cheapest price possible and want to haggle on our quote, the Balmain Slipway is not for you. There are other slipways that would suit you better.

However, if you demand a premium service with attention to detail, then we maybe the right fit for you and your vessel.

And yes, our services are slightly more expensive than some other slipways. And if your phone around I’m sure you’ll find a cheaper price. However, you get what you pay for. And we’re lucky to have customers who demand a premium service and who don’t mind spending a little more for our quality services.

"Their customer service is number 1"

“Balmain Slipways provides a premium, professional service. I was very pleased with their antifouling and detailing job on my boat. They were prompt, helpful and great people to work with. Their customer service is number 1. It has been a pleasure to have them work on my boat.”

What size and type of boats to you work on?
We work on modern fibreglass boats, sail or motor, 30 to 65 feet long.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes we do. In the unlikely event any of our coatings fail within 12 months, we will re-do the job free. It’s that simple. Ask us about our 12 month, Fix it For Free Guarantee when we chat and we’ll fill you in on all the details.
What are your hours of business?
7 days a week excluding public holidays. 9am until 5pm.
How far in advance do I have to book?
Good question. Both of our slipways are always full. And because we’re one of the last remaining slipways in Sydney Harbour, there is always a healthy competition for spots. But usually, we can fit you in within 4 weeks of booking.

My advice would be to book now. If there is a late cancellation, and you don’t mind short notice, we may be able to slot you in earlier.
What type of slipway do you have?
We have two Patent Slipways. This is a lot better than a ‘hard stand’ arrangement that other slipways use because we have full access to the hull. With a ‘hard stand’ there are spots on the hull that cannot be reached. This means spots are missed. Sometimes, a ‘hard stand’ leaves marks on the boat too. At Balmain Slipway, there are no marks left. No missed spots. And we don’t take shortcuts.
